happy 2016

After the three kings* have come and gone I am trying to nudge this blog out of it's hiatus with a tardy piggy gif... (*although I'm not celebrating that holiday I still feel like the new year can only start properly after the 6th.. my Austrian roots I guess OuO)
Happy new year!

wedding invitation and thank you card

Exactly one year ago one of my cousins got married. As a gift for the happy couple I made them the wedding invitation and the Thank You card. The giraffe there was on the loose card inside the invitation with the details for their wedding gift registry on it, as they were heading off to Tansania for their honey moon.
There was no snow around but it was nevertheless a lovely ceremony and fun party afterwards in a great location overlooking good old Salzburg.

Sweet!

I blogged about this 2 years ago when it was first released in France.
Here you can see a little preview --- also with my christmas-peace-hug-drawings popping up *OuO*

soft metal wedding card

In the spirit of the day here is a little card I made for my bro and now sis-in-law. Their wedding was in December last year and it was a blast, beautiful and also rather special as both the groom and bride are a fan of all heavy and dark (with a wink and a bright smile). They were both dressed in black and maroon on the big day but I did nail my brothers shoes in the card :)
The guys serenading the happy couple are inspired by a certain metal band...
...if you are not familiar with the world of tight leather wear and long flowy hair you can have a 'nice' little peek into the band's everyday lives here ... ouO

memory sketching - Character Design course with Stephen Silver - III

This is a memory sketch done within the schoolism class with Stephen Silver - final drawing and doodles of a man spotted while waiting at the traffic lights on a sunny day this summer. As I rarely draw muscles at all I picked him for the assignment. Also, I've never seen such a muscle-man in real life. He really looked like he was pumped up with air...

society6 now also offers mugs and they look pretty neat...just ordered one so in a few weeks I'm gonna see what they look like in 3D. I also adjusted some illustrations for the stationary cards for merry holiday greetings. Jo-hoho :)

* update: the printing on the mug is great! thin lines and colors are made very well. was really happy with it and it made a nice xmas gift :) *

Character Design course with Stephen Silver - II

In lesson 2 we started working on two characters inspired by "Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde". I came up with a shy, nerdy school kid, called Ben Timidson, aged 9 to 10, placed in the late 70's, who is afraid of everything and his vicious, arrogant mutation Jack Debacle, who has a huge temper problem and loves exploring and (then) destroying things.

These are some of the first sketches for the mousy Ben and the punky Jack.

With the help of Stephen Silvers critique I mashed up some parts of the sketches with my favorite one, (which got his approval as well - wohoo :) and started the clean up, so this fellow on the right ended up to be the final one. During the remaining weeks of the class we then had to make turns, expressions and attitudes with the final version of character 1. - might post them as well soon.

Character Design course with Stephen Silver - I

This year I treated myself to an online class at schoolism, Character Design with Sephen Silver. My course started in the middle of May and went on for about 9 weeks. Each week you get access to a new lesson to watch online as well as exercises and an assignment. You have the whole week to upload your work so it can get critiqued by Mr. Silver via video which you can then watch online and download.

The following pic shows the first and the last assignment. We were asked to design a character based on a given description - a wealthy, jolly, elderly entrepreneur from London. At the end of the course we re-did the design we submitted in week 1. I find it pretty nice how he changed...

left - 1st week, right - last week

rough sketches from week 1

The whole course was great, inspiring and motivating and above all very helpful also in kicking my behind to exercise more on a daily basis and in blowing away the dust from some topics like perspective/construction which -I'm a bit ashamed to admit- I used to neglect a little... and it made me rediscover the fun in practicing them. Stephen Silvers critiques are easy to follow, he takes time to attentively look at the work and always comes up with helpful suggestions and tips. If you are wondering if you can do a course while working - I'd say yes. It was a tiny bit stressful at times due to some colliding work-deadlines (but that's the curse of a freelancer anyway) and besides a lot of fun it was still manageable to do the assignments.

So, to sum up, I can definitely recommend it and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna enroll at schoolism again. Yay.

P.S.:
Miss Queen Mob did the course as well, a few months before me, which is why I stayed away from her blog from winter till the end of my class... :) very nice work there -LOuOK

Strapazin #112 "Fernsehserien" (TV serials)

The issue #112 of the swiss comic magazine Strapazin is out since September. (Yay!) It is packed with 150 strips portraying TV-series 'of our youth' and beautifully wrapped in the cover by Christoph Abbrederis
Among many others you'll find Knight Rider, Mumins, Barbapapas, Kojak, Muppet Show, Twin Peaks, Fresh Prince, Parker Lewis, Der Kommisar... just to name a few. Starting with Lassie the shows are put together in chronological order and I very much enjoy 'zapping' through them.
A bit further down on this blog I already posted a little bit about it and my contribution however on the Strapazin website you can find out more, get a sneak peek on the pages and a list of all the great featured artists. Take a looksie HERE
Strapazin #112 is curated by David Basler and Christoph Abbrederis.

(: Get it. Get it now! :)

dancing monkeys

This spring my computer started acting out out a little and I tried to make use of the time spent waiting for his highness to perform so.. I often ended up doodling monkeys (or dancing around all crazy, depending on the rage level… :) as a result here are some apes shaking it (available at society6 - merci!)

comic strip for Strapazin #112 - TV serials

Oy, no time for posting all these months.
So here is a little comic strip* I did this winter for Strapazin #112 - TV serials issue. The issue comes out in September and I can't wait to see all the other strips. In the mean time here is one from the great 'Häcksler' (: http://michaelhackerillustration.tumblr.com/post/42422170143

* it's about a german TV kid's show ("Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl") based on a german childrens book series and in german sooo... my apologies. I'll try and roughly explain it: Eder is an elderly carpenter who is living alone but one day gets stuck with an invisible kobold (goblin) Pumuckl. The new companion can only be seen by Eder and then only when the two are completely alone. Most of the time Eder is scolding Pumuckl for hiding, breaking, stealing things but he is also very fond of him and happy that he keeps him company. here in this strip Eder seems to be a bit confused..

joseph binder award 12

Two weeks ago the Joseph Binder award ceremony took place in Vienna. Thanks to my lousy immune system that week I had to stay in bed and missed the event (-_-) but at least I got to browse through the exhibition a couple of days later and pick up my bag of 'goodies', merit awards and the catalogues.

Below you can spot my 'Fingerprints' and 'Christmas Peace drawings' hanging on the walls of the designforum among all nominated and awarded entries - found this nearly perfect picture in the internet thanks to afraidofus.com.

The gold-winner in the category of Illustration is the stunning illustrated novella 'Adelbert von Chamissos' by Franziska Walther. If interested you can take a look at the full list here or pop by at the exhibition in the designforum Wien (Vienna) until the 16th of December.

je suis un geek

In November Thomas Olivri released this pretty geek-art book 'geek-art un anthologie' and I'm happy that my christmas-peace drawings are a part of it. It sold out on Amazon so quickly that I missed the chance to order a copy. (p_____n!) If you are in France you can get it at fnac as well as in comic book stores. More info on the facebookpage or geekart.net. I found this review on youtube where one can sneak a peak - I do not understand much thanks to my poor french but it looks great. Hope I can get my hands on a copy soon. (and hope it will sell so good that they just have to make an english version :)

Joseph Binder Award 2012 shortlist

Good News! The two entries I sent in got on the shortlist for a Joseph Binder Award and
the Christmas Peace drawings and fingerprints now have a merit award for sure which is already pretty great.
Just sent my confirmation mail for the event which will take place in a month in Vienna.
Because I was feeling 'gif.fy' the other day and to express my joy I made this happy face:

a good read

It's getting cold outside and the dawn knocks early on our heads but I kinda like that. For one it is a good excuse to stay indoors, snuggle up and do some proper comic reading. Or make a drawing, post some blabber and also do a bit of advertising for some peeps  O.o

In May a bunch of gorgeous animation drawing people released a comic anthology under the  name  Neufundland.  The topic is The meaning of Life and each story gives you def. sth. to smile and/or ponder about. Take a look at the beauty here on Sandra's blog and/or order here (hurry up!)
At the release party I got some really nice autograph-drawings into my copy and -behold- an Alfred drawing from Harald Siepermann into my ca. 25year old comic book like this one. many thanks again to Mr. Siepermann if he may stumble upon this... If you do not know who Alfred is (shame on you :) here I just found a short making of video of the whole Alfred story - in german/dutch subtitles.
Being a bit of a shy weirdo and  getting even weirder when meeting someone who's work I admire (and in this case since I was very little…) it was not easy to open my mouth.. Luckily I did get a little push and help there.

quick doodle from the next day...

Phew, must feel a bit exhibitionistic today to blurb that much out.. Anyways, awkward stuff aside, now to porn.

A month ago I've been to another release party and again lots of great drawings filed up the front pages of my freshly bought issue. Bettgeschichten is a compilation  of pornographic comics, from very sweet, witty, humorous stories to very graphic, hardcore wieners and splendid moistness depiction. If text is used it is in german... you can find out more here. But kids, adults only!

After the slightly surreal, sad but also warm (can't think of a better word right now...) 'Everything we miss', 'Some people' (which one can also read online) and the Hilda books Luke Pearson quickly became one of my favorite comic book artists (> tumblr site with work- and some nice inspiration-pics).
And a new Hilda adventure* just came out! Jippie.
*little side note - if someone who knows me (hello, lovely) is reading this and he/she might be looking for a b-day present… nudge-nudge..look no further. °=°

Good read and good evening

stepping outside

this fellow showed up a couple of days ago... last week's heatwave has probably gotten to me... :)

fox and bunnies

When I was sorting out files and updating portfolios last week I got caught up a little with foxes and bunnies and vector doodling... although I'd have enough on my plate. I also have a real life fox in my new neighbourhood who I often catch late at night hanging around the dustbin on the street across my window. So maybe he/she is to blame...
--- thinking of bringing him/her a sandwhich one day. Or I put a bunny in the trashcan... em of course a healthy, vegan tofu bunny rather... much better fit for the 'hood' as well... enough blabber some pictures...

He is my favourite:
